Stillfried, Baron Raimund von

Baron Raimund von Stillfried (1839-1911) was an Austro-Hungarian photographer. Stillfried settled in Japan in 1868 as secretary to the Prussian Legation in Tokyo, and then operated a photographic studio in Yokohama from 1871 to 1881. On his way back to Europe he arrived in Hong Kong in October 1881. Before he left in early 1882 he had been commissioned by the Governor, Sir John Pope Hennessy, to record the visit of the Prince Albert Victor and Prince George, and make views of the colony, especially of the afforestation work that Hennessy had sponsored. The commission was on such generous terms that it profoundly shocked Colonial Office administrators in London. Best known for his photographs of Japan, the photographs here are the result of the Hennessy commission.
