Ueno, Hikoma (Hikoma Uyeno)
UENO Hikoma (1838-1904), a great early Japanese photographer, was born in Nagasaki. He was a commercial and artistic success, noted for his fine portraiture. He co-wrote ‘Shamitsu-kyoku hikkei’ (Manual of Chemistry) with Horie Kuwajiro in 1862. Ueno opened branch photographic studios in Vladivostok in 1890 and in Shanghai and Hong Kong in 1891. The portrait studios in Shanghai were at 16 Foochow Road and at 100 Boone Road, Hongkew, and traded under the name H. Uyeno.
