White, Herbert C.

The American pictorialist photographer, Herbert Clarence WHITE, was assisted in China by his twin brother J. Henry White. In 1927, Herbert C. White published Peking the Beautiful (Shanghai: The Commercial Press, 1927) – a souvenir/gift book with embroidered blue silk pictorial boards, sold in a picture box. Peking the Beautiful contains seventy mounted colour and monochrome photographic plates, with descriptive notes, as well as a preface by Hu Shih (1891-1962), a Chinese former Professor of Philosophy at the National University of Beijing. The White Brothers also published Romantic China (Browhite Arts, Shanghai, 1930) – forty-two photographic plates, with descriptive and historical notes.
