Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Ar01-003. The caption in the album is: 南屏晚鐘 Nanping wan zhong = ‘Nanping evening bell’. Often referred to as ‘Evening bell ringing in Nanping Hill’ (南屏晚钟). This is one of the Top Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake. The evening bell was rung in Jingci Temple, located on the south side of West Lake, as dusk fell in the evening. The sound echoed among the caves and rocks, and could be heard from across the lake. A replacement bell was installed in 1986. Leifeng Pagoda collapsed in 1924, shortly after entry of Sun Chuan Fang's troops into Hangchow. The pagoda has since been rebuilt.
