University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Ar01-006. The caption in the album: 三潭印月 Santan yinyue = ‘Three ponds mirroring the moon’. This is one of the ‘Ten Scenes of West Lake (西湖十景), just off Xiaoying Island. The three small pagodas which stand in the water about two or three metres high were originally built during the Song dynasty and were rebuilt during the Ming. A similar view of West Lake is printed on the Chinese bank note 1 Yuan (CNY) / 1 Renminbi (RMB).
