University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: BL01-05. The Bund had been decorated to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Connaught to Shanghai in April 1890. The banner reads: "天明以露兩含英國之春長艷華" (approximate translation: Dew at twilight and the spring in England are always beautiful). Buildings, from left to right: China Merchants; Brand Bros., and Hongkong and Shanghai Bank (No 12 The Bund).
