University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Do01-31. Hong Kong was hit by a severe frost in mid-January 1893 which was 'unprecedented in the history of the colony', and which particularly affected houses and gardens on the Peak. The press reported that ‘the frost has fixed upon tree, shrub and grass, and as it glisters in the light gives all the appearance of a snow-covered landscape.’ Snow fell at Canton and at Macao: Overland China Mail, 19 January 1893, p. 19.
