University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: EB-s0499. The Burlington Hotel (also known as the Tsangchow Hotel) was at 173 (later renumbered 1225) Bubbling Well Road (now Nanjing Xi Lu), Shanghai. The Shanghai JC Mandarin Hotel was built on the ruins of the Burlington Hotel. Mr Bourke managed the hotel for many years. It was one of the first Shanghai hotels to offer a telephone and central heating in every room by 1904 and an electric lift to all floors (source: "The Old Shanghai A-Z" by Paul French). William ‘Old Bill’ Hawkins ran a famous, albeit illegal, casino out of the Burlington Hotel. See http://www.chinarhyming.com/2018/06/01/the-burlington-hotel-bubbling-well-road/.
