University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Fu-s0158. The inscription on the rock is: ‘民國四十一年元月’, ‘毋忘在莒’, ‘蔣中正’. This calligraphy by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975), was carved on a rock on Jinmen Island (Kinmen, Quemoy) in 1952, and translates as ‘Never Forget our time in Jǔ'. This is an allusion to the Warring States Period, when the State of Qi, cornered into the City of Jǔ by the State of Yan, successfully counter-attacked and retook its territory. The slogan was intended as an analogy to the situation between the Republic of China (i.e. Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China - to inspire KMT forces on Taiwan with the objective of 'recovering' the mainland.
