University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: HD-s56. HD-s56 is a detail from HD-s55. It is likely that the men are members of the Shanghai Rowing Club. The building is the Upper Boat House, on Markham Road (now Kang Ding Dong Lu; Kanding Dong Lu; Kanding Donglu), beside Soochow Creek. It was built c.1875-76. Quoits, croquet and tennis were played on the lawn there.
