University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Hi-s029. Walter Caine Hillier K.C.M.G. C.B. (1849-1927), of H.M.B. Consular Service to H.M.B. Legation Peking, from 23 February 1885 to 27 March 1889. Walter Hillier was H.B.M. Consul to Korea from 1890 to 1896, for which services he received a knighthood. He was Political Adviser to General Sir Alfred Gaselee, Officer Commanding British Expeditionary Force to China, 1900, for which services he was made a Companion of the Bath. The medal at his neck is the KCMG. The star on his chest is the Order of the Bath, CB. See Hi-s033 and Hi-s338.
