University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Hi01-11. Harry Mason Hillier (1851-1924) arrived in China in 1871, aged 20. He spent forty years there, serving in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, and rising to the post of Commissioner, which he held in a range of treaty ports, including in Tianjin (Tientsin) in 1909-1911. Harry Hillier was fluent in Chinese and also a photographer. See Hi-s093 (which is a photograph taken in the same room).
