University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Hn06-178. It is said that this bronze bell was cast in New York in 1865 and shipped to Shanghai in 1881, where it was put up in the fire brigade’s look-out tower in the International Concession, serving as the city's first fire-alarm bell. When the alarm bell became redundant, it was moved in 1922 to Jessfield Park (now Zhongshan Park) but went missing in 1958 during the "Mass Steel Campaign" (The Great Leap Forward). A replica of the original bronze bell now stands in the park.
