Notes
University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: JC-s053. The snake charmer puts a living whip snake in his mouth and brings it out through his nose. The audience are presumably on a ship alongside the wharf. The location where this photograph was taken is not certain, but it may well have been Tientsin (Tianjin) rather than Shanghai - see JC-s051. See also JC-s314.
