Macropolo & Co, Calcutta. Written in ink on the back of the post card: “All the ornaments woman is wearing are made of solid silver and she walks in the street as she is here”. Ani Chokyi was “the head of a prominent Tibetan-Sikkimese family, the owner of a number of businesses and one of the richest women in late nineteenth-century Darjeeling.” Source: 'Photography and Tibet' by Clare Harris (Reaktion Books, London, 2016) page 39. Ani Chokyi travelled with her husband, Ugyen Gyatso, exploring and mapping Tibet on behalf of the British government.
