Lin Zexu (林则徐) (1785-1850), a Viceroy, bureaucrat, philosopher and scholar, who opposed the illegal importation of opium into China by the British. This led to the First Opium War (第一次鴉片戰爭) in 1839, and the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, whereby, Hong Kong was ceded to Britain. Lin is a national hero in China and Taiwan.
