Gabrielle Ray (1883-1973) is dressed as a Chinese paper lantern, in a sequence in the comic opera ‘See-See’, entitled ‘The Courtship of the Two Chinese Lanterns’. ‘See-See’ was a Chinese comic opera in two acts, written by Charles Brookfield, with lyrics by Adrian Rose and music by Sidney Jones, first produced at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London, in 1906. Ray also played the part of So-Hie, See-See’s boy attendant. Ray was considered one of the most beautiful actresses on the London stage and became one of the most photographed women in the world.
