University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: JW-s06. This image is on a cigarette card ('Ogden's Guinea Gold Cigarettes') made of photographic paper. Cigarette cards were supplied free in a packet of cigarettes. Li Hongzhang (Li Hung-chang; Li Huang Chang) (1823-1901). Li Hongzhang, a high-ranking official of the late-Qing, played a seminal role in promoting the modernisation of China in the late nineteenth century. Portrait photograph by James Russell and Sons, Baker Street, London, taken during Li's visit to England in August 1896. This photograph was reproduced in a supplement to 'The Illustrated London News', 15 August 1896.
