University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Jn-s23.  Photograph mounted on card, with photographer's name (THAKER LAL SINGH).  Studio portrait of Kartar Singh Sangha before sailing for Shanghai.  Kartar Singh Sangha's hand is resting on a book named on spine as HOUGHTON L[…].  The book below it is probably a photograph album.  Kartar Singh Sangha was born on 13 December 1899, in Kala Sangian, Kapurthala, India, the son of Sochet Singh.   Kartar Singh Sangha served in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service in Shanghai from November 1920.  After the 1949 revolution, he was employed by the Customs House, Shanghai.  Kartar Singh Sangha was discharged from this employment on 1 November 1952.  He remained in China until 1960.
