University of Bristol – Historical Photographs of China reference number: Jo02-61. No caption for this photograph in the album. Jo02-61, Jo02-62 and Jo02-63, depict the launching of the SS MANDARIN at the Chinese Government's Kiangnan Dock and Engineering Works Yard No. 317, at the south side of Shanghai, on 3 June 1921. In the ways next to the 'Mandarin', is Yard No. 318 and the SS CELESTIAL, which was launched in August 1920. These large vessels represent a key moment in shipbuilding in China. The 'Mandarin' was later renamed 'Stuart Dollar' (1922), 'Floridian' (1936) and finally 'Norbella' (1947). 'Norbella' was sold for scrapping after grounding in 1948.
