Henry Norman Bethune (1890-1939) was a Canadian thoracic surgeon who supported the Chinese Communist Party’s Eighth Route Army from January 1938 until he died of blood poisoning on 12 November 1939. Bethune brought modern medicine to rural China and established training for doctors, nurses and orderlies. He is celebrated and honoured in China and Canada.
