ESL = Erica Susan Lindsay, who is likely wearing the coat and hat made by Hsiao Li Lindsay from Miss Brennecke's pink cardigan in ML05-d32. Grey Martel Hall (c.1895-1984) was an American banker who worked at the National City Bank of New York branch in Beijing. The account of the escape of Miss Brennecke and G. Martel Hall from Beijing is also told in ‘The Unknown War, North China 1937-1945' by Michael Lindsay (London, 1975). "Intn Hotel" = the 'International Hotel' where all the foreigners lived together around a courtyard.

Summer 1942 / HL is pregnant. About to set off for Weishengbu in common clothes. / HL, Martel Hall, Miss Brennecke (German. Engaged to Standard Oil Co. Manager. But Chongqing being bombed, so he sent her to Shanghai. After Pearl Harbor, she came to Peking met up with Hall. They fled. (They got out by car because of her German nationality.) Her luggage included heavy silver framed photo of fiance, an iron, pink cardigan which she gave HL. HL knitted into coat + hat for ESL. Photo taken in "Intn Hotel" in Diao'Er, Pingshan County, Hebei
