University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: ML05-d52. Li Yuantong (李圆通) (1878 or 1886 - 1967). This photograph was reproduced in ‘The Unknown War, North China 1937-1945' by Michael Lindsay (London, 1975), with the caption: “Taoist hermit”. Opposite the image, Lindsay wrote "Lang Ya Shan (Wolf's Tooth Mountains) near 1st sub-district Headquarters ... On the top a memorial had been erected for soldiers who had defended Lang Ya Shan against a Japanese attack until ammunition had run out. The defence and the escape of the survivors was helped by a Taoist hermit who lived in a temple near the top of the mountain." Li Yuantong, who famously rescued two of the 'Five Heroes of Langya Mountain (狼牙山五壮士)’ in 1941, also informed Chinese guerillas about Japanese troop movements.
