Photograph most probably taken by William Band. Trained at the University of Liverpool, William Band taught physics at Yenching University, Beijing. Claire and William Band fled Beijing with the Lindsays on 8 December 1941. Claire and William Band are the authors of 'Dragon Fangs' (George Allen & Unwin, 1947), which was republished in USA as 'Two Years with the Chinese Communists' (Yale University Press, 1948). This photograph was reproduced in ‘The Unknown War, North China 1937-1945' by Michael Lindsay (London, 1975), with the caption: The first Chinese troops we met in December 1941. On k'ang, Mrs. Band, Hsiao Li, Michael Lindsay.
