University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: NA01-08. Cyril Lytton Farrar (1869-1891) was the seventh child of Frederic and Lucy Farrar. He joined the Imperial Maritime Customs Service in June 1889 following an approach by his father, who was then Archdeacon of Westminster Abbey, to Sir Robert Hart. He was serving in Peking when he became seriously ill. On 1 February 1891, Hart wrote to his London agent, Campbell: "His life hangs on a thread and the lungs, so says Bushell, may give out at any moment: no hope of recovery whatever and it is doubtful if he'll see the China New Year, 9th instant, on earth".
