The 'Pei Chi Ko' hill (pinyin: Beijige; Chinese: 北极阁) or the 'North Pole Pavilion' is located inside the city walls. It has long been a site for observatories. During the Nanjing decade, the Nationalist government set up a meteorological research institute on this hill.
