Photo from an album (UoB reference Os01) kept in the School of Oriental and African Studies Archives, London (SOAS reference MS 380 876/1). The 'Duguay-Trouin' (1873-1899) was an ironclad cruiser in the French Navy. The ship took part in the Battle of Foochow, the first engagement of the Sino-French War (August 1884 – April 1885).
