Photo from an album (UoB reference Os05) kept in the School of Oriental and African Studies Archives, London (SOAS reference MS 380 876/5). No caption in the album for this photograph. A large group of Chinese, Japanese and European officials, in formal diplomatic dress, posed in a garden. Probably late 19th century. The man seated in the front row, fifth from left, is British Consul E.T.C. Werner. On Werner see his autobiographical "Autumn leaves; an autobiography with a sheaf of papers, sociological and sinological, philosophical and metaphysical" (Shanghai, Kelly and Walsh, 1928), and Paul French, "Midnight in Peking" (Penguin, 2011), which addresses the 1937 murder of his adopted daughter, Pamela Werner.
