Train wrecked due to an explosion on a bridge, near Luanzhou

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: PC-s007. This picture shows the destruction caused to a train on 3rd February 1912 at bridge No.141 between Leizhuang (Lei-chuang  ; 雷莊  ; 雷庄) and Luanzhou (Luanchou ;  Lanchow ; 灤州 ; 滦州) on the Peking-Mukden Railway (京-奉線 ; 线 ). Rebels blew up two spans of the bridge with dynamite during the post 1911 Revolution struggle between north and south Nationalist factions. Train No. 73 was wrecked, eleven passengers were killed and many were injured. The locomotive did not suffer much damage and was soon repaired. This photograph and others by the same photographer were later used on a series of colour-tinted post cards.
