University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: PC-s054. Captioning on the photograph in Japanese. This photograph depicts ‘The Huanggutan Incident’ at Huanggutan railway station, near Shenyang (Mukden), which occurred on 4th June 1928. Firemen are seen extinguishing the still-smouldering debris beneath a destroyed railway flyover. This was the assassination of the Fengtian warlord Zhang Zuolin (Chang Tso Lin; Chang Tso-lin), whose train was blown up by dynamite. Zhang died of his injuries a few days later.
