Dowager Empress Cixi had this western-style palace built to entertain her female guests and also to receive foreign diplomats. In the aftermath of the Boxer Uprising, Alfred von Waldersee used the building. After the founding of the Republic of China in 1912, the building was renamed the Hall of Benevolence (Jurentang) by Yuan Shikai who also hosted visitors here. After 1949, the building served as the first headquarters of the Central Military Commission (CMC). The building was demolished in 1964 (Source: Wikipedia).
