Notes
University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: RD-s078. On the side of the bus, at lower left, there is an English-language sign that reads ‘Oriental Optical Co. 42-45 Ming Hon Road North’. Ming Hon appears to be a variant of Minghang or sometimes Minghong, a street name in the Hongkou district of Shanghai, and also the name of a small river town upstream of Shanghai (now part of Greater Shanghai). In the Chinese advertisement to the immediate right of the Oriental Optical Co. sign, there are mentions of branch stores at ‘Shi pu’ (Wharf No. 10) and ‘Er ma lu’ (the Chinese name for Jiujiang Road), both Shanghai place names, so it is safe to say that this is a Shanghai bus.
