This photograph by John David Zumbrun (Camera Craft Co.) was published as the frontispiece in ‘Two Gentlemen of China’ by Lady Hosie (London, 1924) and captioned: ‘THE AMAH, OR SERVING WOMAN, CHAFFERING WITH THE STREET HAWKER. Although she is no longer young, she is proud of her business acuteness, as also of her small feet and the neat way in which she has bound them’.
