Notes

Historical Photographs of China reference number: Sw06-156. GW Swire referenced each negative in this album with the prefix F written in Indian ink. This negative is referenced F93 The album itself has also been archived at some stage with the reference P1/VII. The 'Shu-Tung' ('Shutung' or 'Shu Tung'), built by Messrs. Thorneycroft and Co. in Britain in 1910, was a stalwart Upper Yangtze steamer, owned by the Szechuan Steam Navigation Co. The 'Flat' carried the passengers and cargo and was usually towed alongside the 'Shutung'. In turbulent waters or when the current was too strong, the 'Flat' was winched up. The building on the right floated to accommodate dramatic changes in the river level through the year. See Pa01-10.
