Dame Rachel Eleanor Crowdy (1884-1964), English nurse and social reformer, was Principal Commandant of Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs) from 1914 to 1919, working closely with Katharine Furse. She was mentioned in dispatches and created DBE in 1919. Between 1912 and 1914 she had been a lecturer and demonstrator for the Natural Health Society. Crowdy was Head of the Social Questions and Opium Traffic Section of the League of Nations from 1919 to 1931. She was the only woman to be head of an administrative section of the League. In 1931 she was a member of the British delegation to the Conference on Pacific Relations, at Shanghai, having attended the Conference on Pacific Affairs in Honolulu the previous year. In 1939, Crowdy married Colonel Cudbert John Massy Thornhill, CMG, DSO (1883-1952). See other Rachel Crowdy material held at University of Bristol Library, Special Collections.
