A Chinese man (a doctor or retired mandarin), with long fingernails, a cleft lip and a pipe

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: UB01-02. From an album held in University of Bristol Library, Special Collections (ref: DM2520/1). This photograph was probably taken by G.R. Lambert & Co., Singapore. Lambert also made prints, with the captioning 'Chinese Doctor', in their usual script, reversed on the negative, to appear below the table in the print. The image has also been reproduced on an old post card and, again, entitled 'Chinese Doctor'. In 'De La Mer de Chine au Tonkin', this image is captioned 'Lettré retiré des fonctions mandarinales', which may be translated as 'A scholar or intellectual (literati) and retired mandarin'. The long fingernails signify high class and that the man did not do manual or humble work with his hands. He appears to have a cleft lip (“harelip”).
