Photograph taken outside the Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London and China (see VH02-123). Sir Thomas Hanbury (1832-1907) was an English businessman, gardener, and philanthropist. Arriving in Shanghai in 1853, he started Hanbury & Co., merchants in tea and silk. Hanbury diversified into currency trading and cotton broking, to become extremely wealthy and the largest property holder in Shanghai. He built the Giardini Botanici Hanbury at Mortala, Italy.
