University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Bi-s171. This photograph was in an album that had belonged to Leslie Reginald Frederick Shrimpton RN (1910-1964). L.R.F. Shrimpton served on HMS Falcon, in China waters from 1937 to 1939. The Chinese text in the beam of the lighthouse flying the Nationalist flag, reads: 'National Independence' and 'National Survival'. People are shown running away and falling off a cliff, with bags of money (dollars), alongside the text 'Desertion from military duty'.
