American Concession Grounds and Pearl River, Guangzhou

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: UB01-14. From an album held in University of Bristol Library, Special Collections (ref: DM2520/1). This is a view of part of the American Concession Grounds (the Thirteen Factories area), and the Pearl River. In the foreground, there is bamboo staging for drying cloth at a dye house. N.B. the caption in the album (‘View of Shameen, the foreign settlement, Canton’) is incorrect. John Thomson took a photograph (reproduced in 'China and Its People' (1873), Vol 1, Plate XVI) from the same viewpoint. Thomson's photograph shows the buildings (hong) occupied by Messrs Russell and by Messrs Smith Archer in the American Concession Grounds, as well as the wall around these properties. See the right-hand side of Thomson's photograph for the 'overlap' between his photograph and UB01-14.
