Anti-British mural, Shanghai

Anti-British mural, Shanghai

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: AL-s03. Text of mural: "排英 EXOLUDE THE BRITISH". The characters could be read from right to left (英排 Ying pai), although it seems to make more sense to read them from left to right (排英 pai Ying). 英 Ying means British/Britain, and 排 pai can be ‘exclude’, ‘eject’, or ‘discharge’ (amongst other things). 排英 pai Ying could also be translated as ‘anti-British’. The mural calling for the expelling the British, could date either from one of the anti-British boycott movements of the 1925-27 Nationalist Revolution, or from anti-British agitation fomented by the Japanese after their occupation of greater Shanghai in 1937. See FD-s036.
