Printed image, cut from the Supplement to “Black and White” magazine (20 October 1900) and captioned therein as follows: 'ONE OF TUNG FU HSIANG'S MEN / Who came to the British Legation to be treated by a European doctor. He was blindfolded, and fell asleep.' The same image was published in “Black and White Budget” magazine (20 October 1900) and captioned ‘A Chinese soldier (one of Fung Fu Hsiang’s men) who came to the British Legation and surrendered, in order to be treated by a European doctor. He was brought into the Legation and fell asleep, or pretended to, while waiting to be doctored’. Caption on typed list accompanying the box of negatives: 'Messenger asleep'. Digitised from a negative made for a copy print. The man was one of General Dong Fuxiang's force and had a bandage over one eye. Dong led a contingent of Muslim troops (the Kansu Braves) from Gansu to fight against the Eight-Nation Alliance during the Boxer Uprising.
