The East Palace Gate (东宫门Donggongmen), Haidan District, is the main entrance to the New Summer Palace. In this photograph, a small entrance way (hidden behind the nearest lion) is set into a plain wall. A man is standing beside the bronze female lion (with a lion cub under her paw) in the foreground. The male lion is in the background. On the right is a building for guards. Thomas Child took a similar photograph. The entrance gate was rebuilt in 1886, after these photographs were taken.
