The Summer Palace area was burnt down and looted by British and French forces in 1860 in response to the torture and death of hostages. This photograph depicts trees which died after being burnt, and weeds. The Revolving Archive (Zhuanlun Zang) and Emperor Qianlong’s stele is on Longevity Hill (万寿山) in the background.
