In China, prayer beads are named shu zhu 数珠 ('counting beads'), fo zhu 佛珠 ('Buddha beads'), or nian zhu 念珠 ('mindfulness beads'). Photograph by Major J.C. Watson, reproduced as a wood engraving in ‘The Gleaner Pictorial Album, vol III, page 183 and captioned: “BUDDHIST PRIESTS IN THE MONASTERY OF TIEN-TUNG”. Tien-dong (Tiantong Si; The Temple or Monastery of the Heavenly Child; 天童寺), near Ningpo (Ningbo), is a famous Chan (Zen) Buddhist temple. See Hv37-37.
