University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: CP-s009. Hand written on the front of the postcard: "Xmas Greetings from us both.". Post card addressed to R.B. Plant Esq., Northumberland Park, Tottenham, London. Post marked Chungking and Shanghai, 15 November 1907. The ss Pioneer was a side paddle steamer, built in Glasgow in 1899 by Denny's, shipped to China and reconstructed in Shanghai. Cornell Plant had met Mr. Archibald Little in London and was induced to come to China to take command of the paddle steamer 'Pioneer', which had just been built for the perilous Yichang-Chungqing run. In June 1900, under Plant’s command, the ss Pioneer made her maiden trip from Yichang to Chungqing successfully in seven days. See CP-s075.
