HMS Kinsha (formerly ss Pioneer), Upper Yangtze River

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: CP-s075. An unposted post card. The ss Pioneer was a side paddle steamer, built in Glasgow in 1899 by Denny's, shipped to China and reconstructed in Shanghai. Cornell Plant had met Mr. Archibald Little in London and was induced to come to China to take command of the paddle steamer 'Pioneer', which had just been built for the perilous Yichang-Chungqing run. In June 1900, under Plant’s command, the ss Pioneer made her maiden trip from Yichang to Chungqing successfully in seven days. See CP-s009
