Notes
University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: DH-s033. Bei Guo Guarden (北郭煙 ; Beiguoyuan ; Beiguo Garden) was bult by Zheng Yongxi (鄭用錫) (1788-1858) outside Hsinchu (新竹) city walls near the north gate. This photograph is sometimes captioned ‘Garden at Tuck Cham, Formosa’. The garden no longer exists. The Chinese characters on the columns of the pavilion seem to relate to philosophical sayings. Note the blurred ducks and plants which moved during the slow exposure (the time elapsed during the exposure could be estimated by the distance the ducks have paddled).
