Notes
University of Bristol – Historical Photographs of China reference number: DH-s138. This photograph was most probably taken at the execution of prisoners, including pirates, on either 17 April or 11 May 1891, at Kowloon, Hong Kong. Some of those executed by the Chinese authorities on these occasions were the men who had seized the steamer 'Namoa' on 10 December 1890 as it steamed from Hong Kong. The pirates killed the captain, one crew member and one passenger, a Chinese Customs lightkeeper, and plundered the ship. See Pe01-004 (another print), Os03-047 and Wr-s095.
