University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: FH01-040. Real photo post card. HMS Medway was the first purpose-built submarine depot ship, constructed for the Royal Navy by Vickers Armstrong, at Barrow-in-Furness. The Medway was launched on 19 July 1928. It was designed to support up to 18 O, P and R type submarines. On the China Station, it supported the 4th Submarine flotilla. HMS Medway served on the China Station until the outbreak of the Second World War, leaving in April 1940 for the Mediterranean. On 30 June 1942 HMS Medway was torpedoed and sunk by U-372, off Alexandria. This photograph may have been taken near Weihai (威海). Identifiable submarines on the starboard side: 'PE' (HMS Perseus), 'PD' (HMS Pandora) and 'PR' (HMS Proteus). Identifiable submarines on the port side: 'OS' (HMS Osiris).
