Interior of the English entrance to the North Taku Fort

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: GA01-039.  Photograph by Felice Beato. It shows dead Chinese soldiers in the south west corner of the inner (or upper) North Taku Fort. Note that a crossbow is visible on the top of the gun embrasure and two uprights of a scaling ladder appear in the opening.  The photograph was taken shortly after the fort's capture at 9am on August 21st 1860, before the corpses were removed.  See GA01-041, which is a similar view of the same gun embrasure, but with corpses and objects rearranged. See "Of Battle and Beauty - Felice Beato's Photographs of China" by David Harris (Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1999) - Catalogue 17.
